On 29 June 1950, the United States defeated England 1-0 in a World Cup group match at Estádio Independência in Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, england football shirts Brazil. England and the United States were both drawn in Group 2, along with Spain and Chile: under the rules of the competition only the group winner from this four-nation round-robin would progress to the final stage. The match resulted from a challenge issued in the sporting weekly Bell’s Weekly on 8 December 1870 and signed by the captains of five Scottish clubs, inviting any team “selected from the whole of England” to a 20-a-side game to be played under the rugby rules.
